Impact, the Irish pilots' union, said it had received Ryanair's letter on Friday morning.

On Saturday evening Ryanair issued a statement, offering to meet the union and their Ryanair Pilot Committee on Tuesday "if that would suit them better".

The Portuguese pilots" strike scheduled for Wednesday was suspended by SPAC owing to Ryanair's decision to recognise the union "and its commitment to open negotiations with the aim of entering into a company agreement'.

"Putting the needs of our customers first, and avoiding disruption to their Christmas flights, is the reason why we will now deal with our pilots through recognised national union structures and we hope and expect that these structures can and will be agreed with our pilots early in the New Year".

Impact said it would meet Ryanair management on Tuesday and "looked forward to establishing a positive relationship".

Ryanair staff have planned strike action on December 20.

Pilots in Germany have voted to take industrial action during the Christmas period and German union Vereinigung Cockpit said the onus was now on Ryanair to "prove that this announcement is serious".

Impact, which represents Irish-based pilots, has agreed to meet the low-priced carrier's management on Tuesday evening ahead of the planned strike on Wednesday.

Ryanair has sought a meeting with the Irish Airline Pilots' Association on that day, according to The Independent.
