Central Intelligence Agency 'helped foil terrorist attack in Russia'

Putin of Russia called President Donald J. Trump today to thank him for the advanced warning the United States intelligence agencies provided to Russia concerning a major terror plot in Saint Petersburg, Russia...

It followed reports by Russia's state news agency TASS that Putin had called Trump to thank him and the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for providing information that helped thwart a planned attack by "Islamic State" (IS) assailants on St. Petersburg. It said that Putin also told Trump that "if Russian special services obtain any information on terrorist threats against the United States and its citizens, they will definitely and immediately pass it to American counterparts through partner channels".

The leaders' relationship is complicated by ongoing investigations into the Trump campaign's ties to Moscow. On Thursday, the White House said Trump and the Russian president had discussed ways to work together in addressing North Korea's nuclear weapons program. USA intelligence agencies have previously concluded that Russian Federation tried to meddle in the 2016 presidential election in an effort to help Trump get elected.

Putin expressed gratitude during the call for information provided by the CIA that allowed Russia's top domestic security agency to track down and arrest a group of suspects that was planning to bomb Kazan Cathedral and other crowded sites, the Kremlin said. The cathedral is a popular tourist site.

A short piece of metal pipe was packed with low intensity explosive material and a handful of screws meant to cause injury. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo , speaking at a news conference near the site, described the device as "amateur level".

There was no immediate confirmation from US authorities that they had shared intelligence with Russian officials but White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted a confirmation that the two presidents spoke on Sunday.

Putin said Russian Federation would alert USA authorities if it received information about any attack being planned on the United States, the Kremlin said.

In a readout of the call released Sunday afternoon, the White House said Trump "appreciated the call" and "stressed the importance of intelligence cooperation to defeat terrorists wherever they may be". Later, Yefimov told a St. Petersburg court that he was planning to target the Kazan Cathedral. "No Russian lives were lost and the terrorist attackers were caught and are now incarcerated".
