PM Modi commissions Scorpene-class submarine INS Kalvari into Indian Navy

The commissioning of the first Scorpene-class submarine - "INS Kalvari" - into the Indian Navy reaffirms the giant strides taken under the "Make in India" programme, defence PSU Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) said today.

Mr. Modi said India is fully alert with regard to its global, strategic and economic interests in the Indian Ocean. He said the skill-set accumulated during the manufacture of INS Kalvari is an asset for India.

Lauding the efforts of the Navy from disaster management to combating piracy, Mr. Modi said "be it terrorism via sea, piracy, drug smuggling or illegal fishing, India is playing an important role in combating them". "Countries around the world want to work with India in its endeavour for peace and stability", said the PM.

"Our speciality is the human face of Indian diplomacy and Indian defence technology", Modi said.

"The power of Kalvari, that of a tiger shark, will strengthen our Navy", the Prime Minister said.

IDF Located, Neutralized New Terror Tunnel Crossing into Israel
Locating terror tunnels is part of an extensive effort of the IDF since the 2014 Gaza War, to locate underground infrastructure. It now seems that there is a possibility to discover additional terror tunnels, which challenges Hamas from restraining itself.

On the issue of 'One Rank One Pension, he said, "It was because of our commitment that the one rank one pension demand, which was pending since decades, is now a reality".

As per Project-75 of the Indian Navy, 6 Scorpene submarines are to be built by the Mazagon Dock Limited in Mumbai, out of which the first INS Kalvari was commissioned on Thursday, and the remaining 5 are expected to be delivered to the Navy by 2020.

The state-of-the-art features of the Scorpenes include superior stealth and ability to launch crippling attacks with precision-guided weapons.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Navy chief Admiral Sunil Lanba, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis and top defence officials were present at the commissioning ceremony held in Mumbai.

It is the first of six such submarines that will be inducted into the Indian Navy, which represents a significant success for the "Make in India" initiative. The very first INS Kalvari was decommissioned in May 1996.
