Former Georgian president Mikheil Saakashvili has gone on hunger strike to protest his arrest in Ukraine on charges of trying to stage a coup sponsored by Russian Federation, his lawyer and supporters said Saturday.

Thousands of Saakashvili's supporters marched across Kyiv on Sunday, demanding his release and calling for oroshenko to be impeached. Several Verkhovna Rada members appeared at the courtroom as well, and appealed to the judge with a request to free Mikheil Saakashvili.

"I don't consider myself a detainee, I consider myself a prisoner of war", he told journalists before the Monday hearing.

Around 100 supporters of Saakashvili, the man who pulled Georgia out of Russia's orbit in a 2003 revolution before becoming a governor in Ukraine, gathered outside a security service detention centre shouting "shame" on Friday following his arrest.

Middle East protests erupt after Trump recognizes Jerusalem as Israel's capital
France said on Friday the United States had sidelined itself in the Middle East by recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital. Protesters carried Palestinian flags and banners saying "We are with the Palestinians" and "Pray for Palestine".

"I'm not afraid. I consider myself a prisoner of the Ukrainian oligarchy", Interfax cited Saakashvili as saying. Prosecutors allege that Saakashvili cooperated with allies of former Ukraine President Viktor Yanukovych, now in hiding in Russia, and took money from the Russians.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office (PGO) has summoned the leader of the Movement of New Forces Party, Mikheil Saakashvili, for questioning on December 18 as a suspect in a criminal proceeding. Saakashvili served two terms as president of Georgia from 2004-2013.

Saakashvili became governor of Ukraine's Odesa region in 2015 but quit a year later, accusing the authorities of sabotaging reform efforts in the region and nationwide.

"Putin is winning, he is laughing, he is roaring with laughter", Saakashvili continued, ridiculing the notion that he could possibly be plotting together with the Russian authorities. Poroshenko this summer rescinded his Ukrainian citizenship while Saakashvili was out of the country, leaving Saakashvili stateless.
