President Donald Trump has directed NASA to return astronauts to the moon, and eventually send them to Mars.

Echoing astronaut Neil Armstrong's first words upon stepping foot on the moon's surface in 1969, the president called the directive - which codifies instructions that NASA "return American astronauts to the moon" as "national policy", according to Vice President Mike Pence - a "giant step" toward an "inspiring future".

"The moon will be a stepping-stone, a training ground, a venue to strengthen our commercial and global partnerships as we refocus America's space program toward human space exploration".

President Donald Trump signed his administration's first space policy directive today (Dec. 11), which formally directs NASA to focus on returning humans to the moon.

"The President listened to the National Space Council's recommendations and he will change our nation's human spaceflight policy to help America become the driving force for the space industry, gain new knowledge from the cosmos, and spur incredible technology", Hogan continued. "This time we will not only plan on flag and leave our footprint". Sending humans some 140 million miles (225 million kilometers) to the red planet would be a major technological challenge and require massive funding over more than a decade.

Former US president George W. Bush also pledged to send Americans to the Moon as part of the Constellation program, which ran from 2005 to 2009.

Net neutrality regulations enacted in 2015 require that all internet traffic is treated the same by internet service providers.

The event will coincide with the 45th anniversary of the last crewed mission - Apollo 17 - to land on the moon.

NASA recently announced that for human astronauts, the path to Mars will include a stop at the moon, where the agency may build a facility now being called the Deep Space Gateway.

On July 20, 1969, United States astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the Moon. They also said the country isn't the accepted leader in human space exploration any longer, but "should be a leader in space".

"We're dreaming big", he added.
