IDF Located, Neutralized New Terror Tunnel Crossing into Israel

Israel Destroys Hamas Cross-border Attack Tunnel Leading Into Israel

The IDF warning came just one day after rocket fire from Gaza struck southern Israel amid ongoing regional tensions stemming from the U.S. recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Locating terror tunnels is part of an extensive effort of the IDF since the 2014 Gaza War, to locate underground infrastructure.

The IDF said the tunnel did not yet have an exit inside Israel, so it did not yet represent a threat to nearby communities, however Hamas could have made the tunnel ready for a terrorist attack within a relatively short period. The tunnel destroyed on Sunday had been discovered several weeks ago and was monitored by the military, Conricus said. It now seems that there is a possibility to discover additional terror tunnels, which challenges Hamas from restraining itself. A network of Gaza tunnels allowed Hamas gunmen to blindside Israel's superior forces during the 2014 war and the Israelis, with USA help, have since stepped up work on counter-measures.

Winter storm warnings, advisories issued for parts of the area
Benji's snowfall is slowing down in Texas Friday morning and moving toward the Gulf Coast and the Mid-Atlantic. Much of the country, particularly the East Coast, will see a wet winter -- with more snow than usual.

Lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Conricus, a military spokesman, told reporters on Sunday that Israel used a new set of "tools" to destroy the tunnel.

This was the second tunnel destroyed using a new system to detect, expose and destroy tunnels in the past six weeks.

The army said the timing of the weekend operation was not connected to a flare-up of deadly violence that followed President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital. The tunnel is believed to have belonged to the Hamas terror organization. The decision has infuriated the Palestinians, who seek Israel-annexed east Jerusalem as their own capital.
