That attack prompted President Franklin D. Roosevelt to ask Congress on December 8, 1941, to declare war on the Japanese Empire.

Many cities across the nation are holding ceremonies to remember those who died.

Thursday marks the 76th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The devastating surprise left more than 2,400 Americans dead, including civilians, and another thousand wounded.

Joseph Ingalls, a member of the rifle team has a personal connection to the events of Pearl Harbor by his grandfather enlisted into the Army Air Corp after the attack.

More than 2,400 lives were lost when the Japanese attacked.

"Those were the saddest people I've ever seen in my life", said Bell.

Jim Snow and Louis Thomas also took the time to remember their fathers who fought in World War II.

He's now in his 90s and says no school history book comes close to telling the true toll of war.

He said the attack was a "bad mistake of misjudging" America.

"Hearing the alarm, you report for your battle station immediately, in whatever you are wearing", Ganitch, now living in Alameda, California, recounted to Saluting Military Recruits when he was honored by the San Francisco Bay Area veterans organization in June.

"It is truly an honor to be able to join you in the remembrance of those heroes that were unexpectedly thrust into the crucible of war here more than seven decades ago", said Swift. "I believe I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again".
