Amazon launches online store in Australia

"Focusing on customers and the long-term are key principles in Amazon's approach to retailing", said Rocco Braeuniger, Country Manager of Amazon Australia.

Amazon said it planned to offer its rapid-shipping subscription service, Prime, in mid-2018, in a sign it is unperturbed by the geographic challenge posed by one of the world's most sparsely populated countries.

"We've always believed that Amazon is here to assist the retailers of Australia to grow and develop their businesses both locally and internationally".

It will put pressure on local online operations like Kogan and eBay, as well as on traditional retailers like Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, Myer and David Jones.

"By concentrating on providing a great shopping experience and by constantly innovating on behalf of customers, we hope to earn the trust and the custom of Australian shoppers in the years to come", he said.

Free delivery is being offered on eligible orders above $49 and a one-day delivery service is available in select areas.

He said Amazon's key strength in the United States is the fact its strategy is driven by data, not gut feel, which is a key source of the marketplace. "I think this may prove hard".

Amazon's grocery chain, Amazon Fresh, will also not be available at first, though it is expected to open in Australia at some point. They will be shipped from a warehouse in Melbourne.
