If they did, the network would have likely not purged their archives of Doctor Who episodes in the '70s, resulting in many serials from the First and Second Doctor's runs to become lost to oblivion.

The former Lenham resident who now lives in Sussex made a surprise appearance as Doctor Who for the newly released story, Shada, filmed in Cambridge. Worldwide wasn't content to have the episode lost forever, using an animated sequence to help fill in the gaps, in addition to filming a new scene with Baker.

Almost forty years later, though, the cast of the story have been reunited and chief among them is Tom Baker, the Fourth Doctor himself who played the role from 1974-1981.

The episode was partially filmed in 1979, but an engineering strike prevented the episode from being finished. It was never completed due to a strike happening at the time.

Baker starred at the titular Time Lord from 1974 to 1981, and has returned to the role a number of times since, appearing in TV shorts, video games, and 50th anniversary episode "The Day of the Doctor".

However, it will include footage of Baker as he is today, filmed using 1970s cameras.

In the new scene, the Fourth Doctor delivers lines from Adams" original script: "I expect that sometime in the future-in about 200 years' time-someone will meet me and say, "Is that really the Doctor?" I loved doing Doctor Who because it was life to me.

A two-disk DVD is scheduled for release in the United States on January 9 (you can snag a region-free Blu-ray via Amazon.co.uk as early as December 4). "Doctor Who was more important than life to me - I used to dread the end of rehearsal... that's why I can't stay away from it. "Shada" was one of my favourite Doctor Who stories".
