Be serious in fight against terror, arrest Saeed: US tells Pak

Pakistan frees Hafiz Saeed, alleged mastermind of Mumbai attacks

"The United States is deeply concerned that Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT) leader Hafiz Seed has been released from house arrest in Pakistan", State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said in a statement on Friday. "The US did so on the request of India", Saeed told his supporters outside his residence.

Pakistan argues that it has done a great deal to help the United States in tracking down terrorists. India believes that Lashkar-e-Tayyaba was behind the deadly attack in Mumbai.

While Saeed was under house arrest, his JuD charity launched a political party, the Milli Muslim League (MML), which has won thousands of votes in by-elections.

"He was not only the mastermind, he was the prime organizer of the Mumbai terror attacks in which many innocent Indians and many people from other nationalities were killed", spokesman Raveesh Kumar said in a statement.

JuD is considered by the USA and India to be a front for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the militant group blamed for the attack on India's financial capital.

Pakistan has been detaining and freeing Saeed off and on since the attacks that left 166 dead, including several Americans.

After his release, meanwhile, the United States on Friday asked the Pakistan government to make sure that Hafiz Saeed was arrested again and charged for his crimes.

Even though Pakistan has been involved in extensive counter-terror and counterinsurgency operations against al Qaeda, the Pakistani Taliban and ISIS - the military says it has lost more than 7,000 soldiers battling terrorists since September 11, 2001 - it is often blamed for selectively harboring certain other militant groups.

It is the responsibility of the Pakistani government to fulfil its global obligations and take credible and effective action against terrorists like Hafiz Saeed.

Saeed blamed India for his incarceration in Pakistan, saying "Pakistan's rulers detained me on the aspiration of Modi due to their friendship with him".

Last month, however, the Trump administration appeared to revise its hard line against Islamabad.

Non-NATO ally status is a designation given by the U.S. government to close allies who have a strategic working relationship with U.S. Armed Forces but are not members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

He said that Pakistan's resolve, actions and successes in the fight against terrorism, terrorist violence and terrorists are unmatched in the world.

Saeed attacked government of Pakistan for "taking dictation from foreign masters" and spoke about "Indian atrocities" in Kashmir. We've given them billions and billions of dollars, and what did we get? That came about after Pakistani military's purported rescue of American hostage Caitlan Coleman and her family after five years of Taliban captivity.
