After nearly two weeks of ducking questions on whether he still backs Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, President Trump made it clear Tuesday that he stood by his endorsement. "He totally denies it".

Moore and his campaign deny the allegations but have stumbled a bit along the way.

"Corey Stewart, who wants to represent all Virginians in the Senate, believes that Roy Moore's disgusting and predatory behavior should not be condemned", explained Virginia Senator Tim Kaine's digital director in an email, drawing a straight line from Moore to former Trump Virginia campaign chairman Stewart who is challenging Kaine.

The Alabama Republican became embroiled in scandal after The Washington Post reported that he initiated a sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl when he was 32. Since then, at least eight other women have come forward with similar allegations against Moore.

Senate Republicans have already ended their financial support for Moore's campaign.

The ad features Ivanka Trump, who said, "There's a special place in hell for people who prey on children and I have no reason to doubt the victims' accounts".

The Moore campaign lashed out at the news media, Democrats and the GOP establishment in a press conference on Tuesday.

On Monday, White House adviser Kellyanne Conway suggested that electing Mr Moore to help pass the USA president's tax reform agenda took precedence over the widespread disquiet about the allegations. The election is to fill the last three years of the Senate seat once held by Jeff Sessions, who resigned from it to join President Donald Trump's Cabinet as attorney general, the country's top law enforcement position.

Sanders, however, stopped short of calling on Moore to step aside on Thursday when asked about the allegations.

The White House signaled Monday it wants Moore to win the contest.

As Republican senator Susan Collins said she hoped voters would "choose not to elect him", The Birmingham News went to press with an editorial saying the election was a "turning point for women in Alabama" and described the allegations as "horrifying, but not shocking". "I think it's a very special time, a lot of things are coming out and I think that's good for our society and I think it's very very good for women", the president said.

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Doug Jones takes questions from reporters at a fish-fry campaign event November 18 in Birmingham, Ala. Richard Shelby, Attorney General Jeff Sessions (who held the seat Moore is seeking to fill in the December 12 special election) and Ivanka Trump, saying there is no reason to doubt the women who have accused Moore of sexual misconduct.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
