Researchers say coffee could actually benefit you

Drink up: Three cups of coffee a day 'may have health benefits'

Good news for the coffee lovers, as per studies it was revealed by the scientists on Wednesday that the people who consume three to four cups of coffee a day experience more health benefits than the ones who consume less.

The University of Southhampton looked at the impact of coffee-drinking on the human body, exploring 200 studies, and discovered that those who drank about three cups of coffee a day appeared to reduce their risk of getting heart problems or dying from them.

They also found that drinking coffee lowered the risk of some cancers (including prostate, endometrial, skin and liver cancer), type 2 diabetes, gallstones, gout, liver disease and dementia.

Coffee is the most loved and desired drink consumed throughout the world. At the same time, high consumption is associated with an increased risk of bone fractures in women, and can also lead to a higher risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Doctors however advice the pregnant women, children, people with heart disease or peptic ulcers, and those who are elderly to restrict caffeine.

Coffee is a drink made from roasted coffee beans.

Or, conversely, how much is not enough if you want to harness those supposed health benefits?

Furthermore, as Eliseo Guallar noted in an editorial about the study published in BMJ, we're still just looking at a lot of correlation - not at causation.

There also seemed to be beneficial associations between coffee consumption and Parkinson's disease, depression and Alzheimer's disease. "We simply do not know", Guallar wrote, continuing, "Coffee drinking is a complex behavior determined by cultural norms and associated with multiple socioeconomic, lifestyle, dietary, and health behaviors". But liver diseases stood out as having the greatest benefit compared with other conditions.

The drink is more likely to ward off disease than to cause harm, according to the most comprehensive report yet conducted.

As this study shows, some people may be at higher risk of adverse effects, he said, and there is "substantial uncertainty" about the effects of higher levels of intake.

As the paper points to health benefits "associated" with coffee consumption, but not proved to be causal, researchers believe further studies would be beneficial.
