Russian oligarch Kerimov questioned in France over tax evasion

Kerimov was detained upon arrival at the airport on Monday, where he faced two days of questioning over alleged tax evasion involving the purchase of luxury properties.

The judge decided that Kerimov could be released from detenion but had to turn in his passport and could not leave the Alpes-Maritime county Nice is in.

A representative for Kerimov in the upper house of Russia's parliament, where he sits as a lawmaker, declined to comment on the case on Wednesday when contacted by Reuters. The arrest, the Russian Foreign Ministry said, violated the protection from "coercive actions" he enjoys as a Russian senator from the Republic of Dagestan.

Businessman Alexander Stuhldhalter said there was pressure exerted on Senator Suleiman Kerimov by the French authorities.

Russian state news channel Rossiya 24 reported that Mr Kerimov denied any wrongdoing.

"The senator status and the fact that he is a Russian citizen is a guarantee that we will, of course, put in all possible efforts to defend his lawful interests", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Forbes magazine listed Kerimov as Russia's 21st richest person with a net worth of about $6.7 billion.

The French authorities reportedly suspect him of purchasing real estate in the French Riviera through shell companies to avoid paying taxes.
