North Korea Blasts US Terrorism Blacklisting

"As long as the United States continues with its anti-DPRK hostile policy, our deterrence will be further strengthened", he said, referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

European researchers say they have identified the targets North Korea is planning to attack.

The latest sanctions, the sixth of their kind since President Donald Trump took office early this year, marked the first time that the USA government blacklisted North Korean vessels.

Nonetheless, the added onus to doing business with Pyongyang - now a designated state terrorism sponsor - could encourage actions outside the USA, said Daniel Pinkston, a North Korea scholar at Troy University in Seoul.

China's trade with North Korea fell to $334.9 million in October, its lowest since February as imports sank to their weakest in years, data showed on Thursday, the latest sign that tough new sanctions cut business with its isolated neighbour.

Trump said strong US sanctions "supports our maximum pressure campaign to isolate the murderous regime" - a claim that no one would deny.

In recent months, Trump has threatened North Korea with "total destruction" if it refuses to curb its nuclear missile program while simultaneously escalating tensions between the US and North Korea with bombastic name-calling.

After a recent string of missile tests, and its sixth and largest nuclear test in September, North Korea's military testing has been quiet, raising speculation that Pyongyang may be waiting to see what the US offers to entice it to join talks.

The foreign ministers for Cuba and North Korea met Wednesday to reinforce an alliance between their countries against the Trump administration's "unilateral and arbitrary" demands, rekindling a Cold War-era friendship.

Some North Korea analysts argue the state sponsor of terrorism designation and new sanctions could encourage a return to testing and belligerence from Pyongyang and discourage it from entering talks.

Air China's decision came shortly after a visit by a senior Chinese envoy to the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. One of his favorite comments is the US should have re-designated North Korea as a sponsor of terror "a long time ago" - that was a dig against Obama's policy of "strategic patience" in dealing with the North. The spokesperson noted that their actions included expulsion of North Korean workers and diplomats.
