Uber discloses data breach one year after it happened

Uber paid hackers $100,000 concealed data stolen from 57 million accounts

Uber admitted Tuesday to covering up a massive cyberattack by paying hackers $100,000 so they wouldn't reveal that they had stolen sensitive information from 57 million customer and driver accounts.

Rider information included the names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers related to accounts globally.

They also downloaded names and licence numbers of 600,000 of the company's USA drivers, Mr Khosrowshahi said in a blog post. He was not at the helm when it happened. This isn't his first run-in with the ride-hailing company - just previous year his office reached a settlement with Uber over its collection and use of riders' personal information and its delayed disclosure of a 2014 data breach. He was the CSO at Facebook for more than five years and also served as the social networking giant's associate general counsel (in a separate story, Bloomberg reported Sullivan also served Uber as deputy general counsel while he was CSO, though the company never officially named him to such a position). For that reason, Uber will now pay for free credit-report monitoring and identity theft protection services for the affected drivers.

Media reports say that chief security officer Joe Sullivan is out. It also developed security measures to boost controls on their cloud-based storage accounts, Khosrowshahi said. The New York attorney general has opened an investigation, a spokeswoman said.

It is the latest disclosure of a major breach involving a prominent company.

Khosrowshahi took the position of Uber's CEO on August 30 this year.

"It's always the company's responsibility to identify when United Kingdom citizens have been affected as part of a data breach and take steps to reduce any harm to consumers".

London's transport regulator recently pulled Uber's operating license, saying the company failed to deal with public safety and security issues.

"Senate Commerce Committee should hold hearing to demand Uber explain their outrageous breach - and inexplicable delay in informing its consumers and drivers", Blumenthal, a Connecticut Democrat, said in a tweet on Wednesday.

U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal took to Twitter to call for the FTC to investigate Uber, describing the company's behavior as "inexplicable" and asking for the FTC to impose "significant penalties".

"Research we conducted this year showed that in just the first half of 2017, 65% of organisations fell victim to malware-related breaches and 55% experienced phishing-initiated breaches". It was also in blue moon due to the sexual harassment case. Regulatory authorities were being notified, the company added. Two of the employees responsible for not initially revealing the attack have been fired, Khosrowshahi wrote.
