Padmavati row SC rejects plea to block Bhansali's film

The makers of "Padmavati" on Sunday deferred its release from the slated December 1, even as protests and threats continued unabated.

Amid the controversy over Padmavati, Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh on Monday said "nobody had the right to distort history".

Describing Padmavati as "Rashtra Mata" (mother of the nation), he said, "She had made supreme sacrifices (for a good cause)".

The Rajput Community had reportedly submitted a memorandum before CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan seeking a ban on "Padmavati".

Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje had on Saturday written to Information and Broadcasting Minister Smriti Irani o ensure that "Padmavati" is not released without necessary changes to the film.

"If historical facts are distorted, and if anything is shown or said in the movie against the respect of the country's mother Padmavatiji, then that movie can not be allowed to release in the land of Madhya Pradesh", Chouhan said, eliciting a rousing applause from the audience.

He said, this is disrespectful and "The insult will not be tolerated" adding that the movie will not be released in MP even if the censor board agrees to release the movie.

The Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus has been marred in controversy that the film has "distorted" historical facts of Rajput queen Padmini.

"The Padmavati controversy is not only unfortunate but also a calculated plan of a political party to destroy the freedom to express ourselves".

Rajput Karni Sena (RKS) has been protesting against the film demanding a nationwide ban on its release. Captain Amarinder Singh, the CM of Punjab, has slammed the film and praised the protestors.

Padmavati, starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has been in the eye of storm since it started filming.
