Zimbabwe's ruling party meeting to expel Robert Mugabe

If Robert Mugabe digs in and his health holds up, it could take weeks of wrangling before any successor can legitimately take over. If Mr Mugabe finds that his position has become untenable then he can resign as per section 96. Zanu-PF says she will face charges along with several others.

"I expect that the impeachment proceedings will now commence", he said.

The ruling party is discussing impeachment.

Analysts have suggested that Mr Mugabe's infamously stubborn character could also be hindering the conclusion of a deal between the president and the army.

Mugabe astonished Zimbabweans with his defiance in a national address Sunday night after being fired as party leader.

Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe National broadcaster, ZBC, has been told to be on standby by the army as there could be another announcement from either Mugabe or the military tonight.

In a live televised address to the nation on Sunday night, the president of nearly four decades had been expected to resign, but instead promised to lead a Zanu-PF party conference in December.

"It's absolutely astounding. Mugabe behaves as if nothing ZANU-PF said (Sunday) was of any relevance", he told AFP. The congress is expected to ratify Mugabe's firing, expel First Lady Grace Mugabe, and make former vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, whose firing earlier this month triggered the military action against Mugabe, the new leader of the party and the potential new president.

When Zimbabwe's military sent tanks into the capital, Harare, and took President Robert Mugabe into custody almost a week ago, it was clear they wanted a quick resolution to the growing discontent with the longtime president.

"He might not leave tomorrow or next week, but he is clearly at the end of his political life", said Mr Eldred Masunungure, a politics lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe.

The party has opted to press ahead with impeachment proceedings after Mugage failed to resign before the noon deadline today.

Zimbabwe's influential war veterans association also demands he step down immediately, urging people to join huge street protests planned for the weekend.

He is 93, in failing health and has enemies on nearly every side, but President Robert Mugabe used his TV address on Sunday to display the survival skills of one of the world's wiliest politicians.

Noting that many people see the deteriorating economic situation in Zimbabwe and the accompanying myriad of social challenges as the cause of the current crisis, the Church leaders say those are just "symptoms of a deeper disease that has affected the nation for a long time".

"The process is tedious and it might take some days".

Generals and army commanders sat beside Mugabe during the speech and noted he switched speeches before beginning his remarks.
