The gunfight started late afternoon on Saturday following a cordon and search operation launched after receiving specific inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. The joint team of forces intensified the combing operation and the hiding militants opened fire upon them triggering of an encounter, he said.

Among the six foreign terrorists killed was Owaid, the nephew of LeT operation commander Lakhvi, the mastermind of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack. Some police officers said that this is one of a big setback for the terrorists as the same area had witnessed a series of attacks on security forces by terrorists.

Two Army soldiers have been injured in the encounter which is still underway.

During the encounter, clashes erupted in the area between locals and government forces.

The recent rains and snow pushed out a group of Lashkar e Toiba militants from the woods and were killed in a gunfight in Jammu and Kashmir's northern Bandepur district, sources in government said on Saturday. Before floating his political organisation Awami League and being returned as MLA in Sonawari segment in 1996, Kukka Parray had established a strong base with Army's support in his residential village of Hajin.

"One soldier has also sustained injuries in the operation", Col. Kalia said. Two Garud commandos of IAF, which was the first ever fatal casualty of this elite force in J&K, were also killed in the same gunfight. LeT however blamed security forces for his killing.

Owaid is the younger brother of Musaib, who was killed in January this year.

On January 10, 2017, another terrorist was killed in yet another encounter in the same village.
