Twitter is taking away its blue tick verification from far-right extremists

Users gifted with the blue badge are usually perceived as legitimate accounts, meaning Twitter has contacted or confirmed the identity of the account holder, but some badges are reserved for high-profile accounts, such as the president's, which ostensibly enables certain features non-badge holders aren't entitled to.

The announcement came after people criticised Twitter for verifying the account belonging to the organiser of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left one dead in August.

The decision comes about a week after an uproar that was set off when Twitter gave a verification badge to Kessler.

"Verification has always been perceived as an endorsement", the company said in a tweet. "We have paused all general verifications while we work and will report back soon". It has maintained that verification is meant to authenticate someone is who they say they are and is not meant to be an endorsement of that individual.

They've also stopped accepting public submissions for verification.

Twitter announced on Thursday, November 16, that it is reviewing the behavior of Twitter users with verified accounts, and removing the verification badges from users deemed to have broken the rules on the social media service.

In January, Twitter revoked a Breitbart staffer's verification badge as a response to hate and harassment campaigns, which started the confusion around what having a verified badge really meant.

Zimbabwe is now in turmoil, with President Robert Mugabe under house arrest as a military coup unfolds. Hunting group Safari Club International , which sponsored the meeting in Africa, praised the decision.

People who post racist and violent content on Twitter will lose their coveted verified blue tick status.

The accounts that are now unverified have long shared offensive memes and tweets, and Twitter seems to be taking user complaints about them seriously.

Twitter hasn't banned white supremacists and neo-Nazis from its site, but it has yanked away their "verified" status. Degrading his account in this fashion seems to be more of a punitive move, signaling that the company doesn't approve of his opinions rather than questioning whether or not he was actually the Richard Spencer.

"Twitter has changed their verification policy just to be able to censor me", Kessler wrote on Twitter.

Twitter at the time of halting the verification process stated that "We're working on a new authentication and verification program".

Other accounts that had their verification badges removed objected loudly on the timeline. The platform was first touted as a place where free speech reigned, but Twitter is realizing the consequences of allowing hate speech to go unchecked.

In a phone interview, Spencer said he was anxious the move would lead to people like him being banned from Twitter. Supporting organisations or individuals that promote the above.
