The work subsequently belonged to Charles I of England around 140 years later and disappeared for almost 250 years before ending up in the hands of a British collector, Sir Francis Cook, in 1900. Christie's did not identify the seller, other than to say it was a European private collector. The previous auction record for Leonardo da Vinci was set at Christie's in 2001 when Horse and Rider, a work on paper, sold for $11,481,865.

The painting, called "Salvator Mundi", Italian for "Savior of the World", is one of fewer than 20 paintings by Leonardo known to exist and the only one in private hands.

Andy Warhol's monumental 1986 work "Sixty Last Suppers" based on da Vinci's work, sold for $US60,875,000, while two works by fellow American painter Cy Twombly added more than $US73 million to the kitty, with Untitled, 2005, selling for $US46,437,500 and Sunset (1957) selling for $US27,312,500.

The highest price paid for a work of art at auction had been $179.4 million (152 million euros), for Picasso's "Women of Algiers (Version O)" in May 2015, also at Christie's in NY.

The 26-inch-tall (66-centimeter-tall) Leonardo painting dates from around 1500 and shows Christ dressed in Renaissance-style robes, his right hand raised in blessing as his left hand holds a crystal sphere. Members of the public cared little if at all whether the painting might have been executed in part by studio assistants; whether Leonardo had actually made the work himself; or how much of the canvas had been repainted and restored. Standing in front of his paintings, it becomes impossible for one's mind to fully unravel or comprehend the mystery radiating from them - both the "Mona Lisa" and "Salvator Mundi" are flawless examples of this.

Earlier, 27,000 people had lined up at pre-auction viewings in Hong Kong, London, San Francisco and NY to glimpse the painting of Christ as "Savior of the World".

A staff member poses with a painting by Leonardo da Vinci entitled "Salvator Mundi" in London on October 24, 2017, before it is auctioned in NY.

Gouzer, the co-chairman of Post-War and Contemporary Art at Christie's, talked of the "incredible journey" this sale had involved.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience", she said. Peter's painting was valued at $76 million.

The work was exhibited at The National Gallery in London in 2011, after years of research trying to document its authenticity after it was found, mistaken for a copy, in a USA auction in 2005.

"It was process that began shortly after the work was discovered - heavily veiled with overpaints, long mistaken for a copy - in a small, regional auction in the United States in 2005".
