German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives to attend the 23rd Conference of the Parties climate talks in Bonn Germany Wednesday Nov. 15 2017. World leaders arrive at the global climate talks in Germany on Wednesday to give the negotiations a boost

The initiative - dubbed the Global Alliance to Power Past Coal - was unveiled in Bonn, Germany today by Environment Minister Catherine McKenna and her United Kingdom counterpart, Minister of State for Climate Change and Industry, Claire Perry. Its members have committed to phasing out coal-burning power plants, supporting clean energy and encouraging carbon capture technology.

Canada is leading the way on an worldwide push to phase out the use of coal power.

"Air pollution from coal has bad consequences for health", she adds.

But some of the world's biggest coal users, such as China, India, the United States, Germany and Russian Federation, have not joined.

Even Germany and Poland, hosts of climate talks this year and next, are holding onto coal for the foreseeable future.

In his landmark 2015 environmental encyclical, Francis said global warming is "mainly" due to human activity and he called for fossil fuels to be progressively phased out without delay.

However, Apple also revealed that its smartphone lineup will support up to 7.5-watts of fast wireless charging too. However, while convenient, it did have some drawbacks compared to plugging in an old-fashioned Lighting cable.

Last September, he said the spate of hurricanes at the time should prompt people to understand that humanity will "go down" if it does not address climate change and history will judge those who deny the science on its causes.

"In relation to agreements to end the use of coal, we recognize that countries will take different paths depending on their current energy mix", he said, adding that reducing emissions was the "most important objective".

Todd Stern, the Obama-era official who helped deliver the 2015 Paris Agreement, on Thursday lashed out at the Donald Trump administration's "wrongheaded" decision to abandon the first-ever pact committing all countries to limiting climate change.

McKenna says the alliance will see governments helping other governments make the positive change.

"Keeping it in the ground is the safest way to keep us below the survival climate threshold set out in the Paris Agreement", said David Paul, environment minister of the Marshall Islands.
