South Korean officials detected signs recently that North Korea's military was preparing for winter drills. Said he wants them to denuclearize. "But our military is keeping a full readiness posture against the possibility of North Korea's provocations".

"That might be a unusual thing to happen but it's a possibility", he said.

South Korea and the United States were also conducting joint military drills in the East Sea utilizing three USA aircraft carriers.

Trump said in a speech at South Korea's parliament Wednesday, "Currently stationed in the vicinity of this peninsula are the three largest aircraft carriers in the world loaded to the maximum with magnificent F-35 and F-18 fighter jets".

Trump is now in Vietnam attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit, but he took the time to tweet: "Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me 'old, ' when I would NEVER call him 'short and fat?'". The regime has interpreted America's past restraint as weakness.

Asked if he could see himself being friends with Kim, Trump said: "That might be a odd thing to happen but it's a possibility".

Also on Saturday, the US and South Korean navies launched four days of joint drills off the east coast of South Korea. The last time such a convergence of military power occurred was in 2007 in waters off the USA territory of Guam.

Along with the three carrier groups, he said the USA has reactivated round-the-clock sorties with nuclear-capable B-52 strategic bombers "which existed during the Cold War times".

"The large-scale nuclear war exercises and blackmails, which the USA staged for a whole year without a break in collaboration with its followers to stifle our republic, make one conclude that the option we have taken was the right one and we should go along the way to the last", Ja said.

But in its retort yesterday, North Korea said Mr Trump's warnings "can never frighten us or put a stop to our advance", but rather "pushes us to speed up the efforts to accomplish the great cause of completing the state nuclear force".

Che then referred to Trump, 71, as "President Miss Thang" when referencing the president's response to last week's mass shooting in Texas.
