Study finds sex unlikely to cause cardiac arrest, researchers 'surprised'

Men more at risk of rare heart attack after sex claims Study

Despite another partner being present in all sex-linked SCAs, just one-third of those patients received immediate CPR. Sudden cardiac death kills about 350,000 Americans each year.

"People will ask their doctors if sex increases their risk of sudden death, and we've never had the answer before because there never was a study", senior study author Dr. Sumeet Chugh, said a statement from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Previous studies have confirmed sex can trigger non-fatal cardiac events like heart attacks, but Chugh and colleagues designed their study to determine whether or not sexual activity is a risk factor for SCA in particular, since the condition accounts for 350,000 deaths in the US each year.

Only 20 percent of the 34 patients identified in the study survived, in part, the researchers believe, because CPR was only administered to one third of the individuals who experienced an SCA, despite the fact that a partner was there to witness the event.

Men with a history of cardiovascular disease may be more at risk of facing sudden cardiac arrest during or soon after sex, a study led by an Indian-origin researcher has revealed. The risk of that happening is very low, according to a new study.

Men are more likely than women to have their heart stop as a result of sex.

According to the American Heart association, fewer than 10% of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests survive.

Man rams vehicle into students in Toulouse, arrested
When asked about the possibility the man was motivated by terrorism, the prosecutor said the attack was "nothing of that order". A driver was arrested after the collision, and the Toulouse prosecutor has been called to investigate, the ministry said.

Just 34 out of the 4,557 heart failures inspected happened amid or inside one hour of sex and 32 of those influenced were men.

Cardiac arrest results in more than 300,000 deaths each year in the USA alone, the researchers say.

Patients who had sex before they went into cardiac arrest tended to be about 60 years old on average, compared to around 65 for the patients who were doing other things when their heart stopped beating.

Of the cardiac patients playing sports or exercising at the time of their arrest, almost all (95 percent) were in the presence of bystanders at the time and 80 percent received CPR from bystanders before getting to the hospital.

There are many unknown variables that could have affected the data (drug use or frequency of sex, for example) but all things considered, sex-induced SCA is rare enough that most people shouldn't worry about it.
