Facebook Global Head of Safety Antigone Davis has clarified some things about how Facebook's test pilot to combat revenge porn in Australia works. So if someone posts the offending pic, Facebook can prevent it from being uploaded.

Once Facebook receives notice of the image, their community operations team will use image-matching technology to prevent the image from being uploaded or shared online.

Editors' Note: Adult Australians concerned that an intimate image may be shared online can complete an online form on the eSafety Commissioner's official website detailing their concerns.

Revenge porn is a growing issue in Australia where studies suggest that one in five women aged 18-45 may have been victims.

The program in Australia is in conjunction with the government's e-Safety Commission, an office dedicated to promoting digital safety, especially for children.

"We would expect that Facebook has absolutely watertight systems to guard the privacy of victims".

It's an idea that sounds like utter madness, but Facebook is at pains to convince users that it's actually a brilliant solution. Once the photo has been uploaded, Facebook's hashing system can recognize the photo without it being visible to the public.

This imprint will then flag up through messenger and automatically stop it being shared on Facebook, Facebook Messenger and Instagram.

"They're not storing the image, they're storing the link and using artificial intelligence and other photo-matching technologies", she said.

Some critics, however, suggest a better method would be one that doesn't require uploading the image in the first place.

Australian e-safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said it is one of four countries - the others being the US, United Kingdom and Canada - participating in the test program, but Facebook told "Today" that it is still in talks with the other three nations about expanding there.

Facebook is testing a controversial new strategy they claim will help protect its users from becoming victims of revenge porn. It used this to prevent the image spreading and closed down the majority of accounts reported to it as hosting such images.
