CoPIRG: High levels of lead in some fidget spinners sold at Target

One of the fidget spinners contained more than 300 times the legal amount of lead allowed in children's toys. The sellers maintain the item is not for kids

However and since the CPSC's lead-restriction guidelines differ between items marketed to adults and those targeted at children under 12, Target says its in the clear to keep selling these models. Company representatives argue that a fidget spinner is not a toy because such products are not intended for kids 14 and older.

The research revealed some of the spinners could contain as much as 300 times the federal limit for lead in children's products.

The Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass tested for 33,000 parts per million of lead, and the Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Metal tested for 1,300 parts per million.

The products are supplied by Bulls-I-Toys, based in Des Moines, Iowa.

Harold Chizick, a spokesperson for Bulls-I-Toys, released this statement, "Safety is one of our top priorities".

Exposure to high levels of lead can cause developmental problems in children, organ damage and other long-term health issues.

The "Lead Safe Mama" blog and the U.S. Public Interest Research Group are now calling for those products to be taken off store shelves.

Target's website said initially that the specific spinner wasn't available in stores within 100 miles of Cleveland, but Cleveland 19 checked that and went to two stores - not finding one at the first, but finding the spinner in question at the second store. "Beware of these two fidget spinners, as they have unsafe amounts of lead". Additionally, the packaging for the brass spinner says the toy is appropriate for ages "6 and up".

"All fidget spinners have play value as children's toys regardless of labeling", said Cook-Schultz. A spokeswoman for the CPSC said she could not comment specifically on the products being sold by Target.

If you've purchased these toys and are anxious about lead exposure, U.S. PIRG is advising consumers to stop using the two fidget spinner models immediately, and to place them in a bag out of reach of children. The CPSC's lead maximum is set for kids toys marketed at 12 years or younger, so the spinner is technically legal despite the insane amount of lead within it. It's not the first time the toy has been investigated for safety reasons.
