Facebook is using nude photos to prevent the spread of nude photos

Facebook wants users to share their nude photos with it as it fights revenge porn

Facebook told ABC News in Australia the social networking giant would "hash" images, marking them digitally in such a way that any attempted to upload them in future would be blocked. After that they will be asked to submit a nude image, which will be then passed on to Facebook.

The social network is trialing the technology in Australia in partnership with the office of government eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant.

If you think your nude photos could end up on Facebook or Instagram, you can send a copy of the photo through Facebook Messenger to company officials. You send the nude to yourself in Messenger, and Facebook creates a hashed digital fingerprint of the photo - an encrypted version of the raw data in the image file.

"Once Facebook is notified, they use image-matching technology to access and tag the image to prevent anyone from sharing it on their platforms", USA Today explained.

Is Facebook storing my image?

Earlier this year, for example, Facebook shut down a private group called Marines United, in which more than 30,000 members, many of them active-duty Marines, solicited and shared nude photos of their female colleagues.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Details Revealed with Nintendo Direct Video
The same day, the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Edition Nintendo Switch Pro Controller will launch at a suggested retail price of $74.99. Nintendo also released a spiffy cinematic Xenoblade 2 character trailer and revealed the game will be getting a dual audio track.

Facebook has teamed up with the e-Safety Commissioner to protect your intimate photos in case your phone gets hacked or you and your soulmate weren't really made for each other because your now-ex is the type of jerk who would even consider posting revenge porn. "My specialty is digital forensics and I literally recover deleted images from computer systems all day - off disk and out of system memory". People often capture images or video of their intimate acts either consensually or discreetly.

However, the trial won't completely solve Australia's revenge porn woes, Clare McGlynn, an expert from Durham Law School, told BBC.

Facebook promises that your naked selfies will be safe with it; it has said that it will not store users' photos on any of its servers.

It's an idea that sounds like utter madness, but Facebook is at pains to convince users that it's actually a brilliant solution. Once the photo has been uploaded, Facebook's hashing system can recognize the photo without it being visible to the public.

It's unclear whether Facebook is planning on bringing the technology to WhatsApp once it's capable of running autonomously, but if it really wants to make revenge porn a thing of the past, it will most definitely need to.
