21st Century Fox Considering Selling Much of Itself to Disney

Even before the latest round of consolidation, News Corp., the original parent company of 21st Century Fox, had tried to buy Time Warner itself.

Bloomberg is reporting that while talks between Disney and Fox did take place over the past few weeks, talks have now stalled.

21st Century Fox declined to comment.

According to CNBC, the buzz around the talks is that a deal will come to fruition due to Fox being rather bullish about its desire to let go of its purely entertainment branch.

According to the sources, Disney would not buy all of Fox and the goal would be to form a much stronger traditional Hollywood studio in an era of fierce competition from internet companies like Netflix and Hulu. It would also have kept its broadcast network and the local broadcast stations it owns. Apple, which also reportedly eyed the company, has always been seen as a potential buyer for Disney. Walt Disney can't own two broadcast networks, so it wouldn't buy the Fox network.

Sessions later recused himself from all matters related to the campaign, citing his support for the President's successful bid. But he downplayed the significance of the meetings, telling the Times he had "a very brief hello to a couple of people".

Meanwhile, Disney would get control of major entertainment brands - 20th Century Fox Studios, Fox Television, FX and National Geographic, as well as global brands like Star and Sky - as it gears up to launch a Netflix-style streaming service next year.

If a deal like this did happen and did receive regulatory approval, it could have some significant effects on sports.

"I see lots of synergies for Disney". This could mean great news if you are a fan of the Marvel comic book superheroes. The additional movie content from 20th Century Fox would make the service a big competitor to something like Netflix. He assumes Fox shareholders would get equity in the larger Disney. So it would definitely be interesting to see how a more-focused-on sports Fox would do, and how investors would react.

Fox's shares were briefly suspended and then rose more than 7% in afternoon trading in response to the news, which would combine some of the most famous media brands in the world.
