Navy investigating two SEALs in connection with death of Green Beret: report

Military criminal authorities are investigating the death of an Army Green Beret as a possible crime, a Navy spokesman said Sunday.

Melgar, a 34-year-old veteran of two deployments to Afghanistan, was found dead on June 4 in the embassy housing he shared in the Malian capital, Bamako, with several other Special Operations forces. He was on assignment for counterterrorism and training.

Melgar's superiors in Germany suspected foul play and immediately sent an investigator to the scene, the newspaper reported. Military officials have concluded that Melgar died by strangulation, and two unidentified Navy SEALs have been placed under suspicion. Originally the Army's Criminal Investigation Command was investigating Melgar's death, but on September 25 the case was taken over by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which is not releasing details about the investigation or a possible motive.

The large fee increase proposal offers a very brief 30-day public comment period . Some are concerned the new fees could keep potential visitors from the parks.

NCIS did not divulge details of the investigation or provide theories on why Melgar was killed. While the Naval Criminal Investigative Service has not charged anyone yet, the two SEAL members are considered "persons of interest" in the homicide, the Times reported. His widow, Michelle, and his brother, Shawn, declined to comment to the Times.

The ambush in Niger that killed 4 USA soldiers, two of which being Green Berets, is still under investigation.
