Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

Families across the tri-state will be able to dispose of unwanted prescription drugs this weekend.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs.

They partnered with the Drug Enforcement Administration to safely collect and discard medications.

Six location sites will be set up from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday in locations ranging from Beaumont to Port Arthur, locally. "Keeping unused, unnecessary, or expired medication in homes increases the risk of it being abused".

Last April, Americans turned in 450 tons -900,000 pounds - of prescription drugs at nearly 5,500 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,200 of its state and local law enforcement partners.

Individuals can take pills and other solid forms of medication to one of the collection sites available in the area. At the meeting, DEA Agent John Kushnir and Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics Director John Scully, presented on the Takeback Day initiative and said the drop off locations are easy, convenient and free.
