Woodward had the message "Drive Carefully Me" engraved on the back of the watch.

The early Rolex Daytonas are the Ferrari 250 GTOs of that bubble (without the fun a vintage Ferrari race auto can offer), and if you add the icon that is Paul Newman to the picture, their no sum stopping the most addicted Rolex fanatics.

The "Paul Newman Rolex Daytona" watch was sold to a buyer over the phone for $17.75 million (15.3 million euros), the highest price ever achieved for a wristwatch at an auction.

Officially called the Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona, it was produced in six series between 1963 and the late 1970s, but was phased out because of poor sales, according to Forbes. With more than 700 people in the room watching the auction take place, competing phone bidders went back and forth until the hammer price of $17.8 million was settled on by the victor. Legend has it that it became popular when Paul Newman wore it for a photo-shoot with an Italian magazine.

"Pop handed James his Rolex and said, ´If you can keep in mind to wind this each day, it tells pretty good time, ´" wrote Nell in a signed letter accompanying the sale.

Authorities also said during the news conference that he left behind a message with a map showing where Theresa Lockhart's body was.

In 1984, he gave the timepiece to his daughter Elinor "Nell" Newman's college boyfriend, James Cox, and she detailed when it was passed on in a letter accompanying the lot.

"At that time, I knew Rolex was an incredible brand, but I had no idea how significant the watch was".

"If Paul was alive", Cox told the Times, "and I went to him and said, 'Hey, Paul, that watch you gave me, it turns out that it's super-valuable, super-iconic, ' I think the first thing he would say would be: 'Well, kid, what are you going to do with it?"

The timepiece was so "rare", so "famous" and so "legendary", that watch collectors and dealers exhausted of adjectives and turned to full-throated phrases.
