Report: Dwight Freeney signs 1-year contract with Seattle Seahawks

With Avril going down with a neck injury and Bennett also ailing, Dwight Freeney is certainly a welcome addition to the Seahawks' options at defensive end. Freeney's first game could be Sunday against the visiting Texans.

The Seattle Seahawks added veteran defensive end Dwight Freeney to bolster their pass-rushing depth as the two sides agreed to terms on a one-year contract late Tuesday night. The veteran defensive end was still a free agent and the Seahawks made a decision to offer Freeney a deal to finish out the 2017 #NFL season in Seattle.

He joined the San Diego Chargers in 2013 and played two seasons with the club as a linebacker before landing with the Arizona Cardinals in 2015.

Freeney, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, is returning for a 16th National Football League season at age 37.

All told, it could end up eclipsing even the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise for sheer absurdism. The addition of Jeff Goldblum as the Grandmaster was genius too, he's great in the film.

Freeney was with the Indianapolis Colts for 11 seasons, the San Diego Chargers for two, one with the Arizona Cardinals, and then previous year with the Atlanta Falcons.

Avril, 31, has been reported as wanting to continue to play but the team is waiting to see if doctors will give clearance for him to take the field again. He would play in 20 games and record four sacks. Avril was later placed on injured reserve.

Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson welcomed the "Sack King" to the squad in a post on social media.

Freeney, who was a first-round pick of the Colts in the 2002 NFL Draft, was part of the Colts team that won Super Bowl XLI to cap the 2006 season. He spent the first 11 years of his career with the Indianapolis Colts, where he was consistently one of the most dominant defensive players in the league.
