Former FBI Director James Comey, who has cultivated a low public profile since his surprise firing last May, confirmed Monday that he is the author of a Twitter account that was previously anonymous - and signaled that he is going to rejoin the national conversation.

Gizmodo speculated that Comey was behind the account of Reinhold Niebuhr, but there was no confirmation until the fired director posted a picture of himself standing in the middle of a road, peering across cornfields.

The pseudonym was confirmed as Comey by Brookings Institution legal analyst Benjamin Wittes. In introducing the Twitter account, he added, "Gotta get back to writing".

Comey has a book due out next spring.

Since joining in February 2014, Comey's account has tweeted six times and amassed more than 100k followers.

He further added that the announcement signalled a victory for those who had been rooting for a political solution in the state. He added an all-party delegation had suggested that the dialogue process start with all sections.

He has been mostly off the radar since May, when Trump fired him amid an investigation into the Trump campaign's potential ties to Russian Federation. Instead, he tweets under the name, "Reinhold Niebuhr", a late American theologian whom Comey studied and wrote a thesis on at the College of William & Mary, according to the university's newspaper.

Another shows birds in flight with the notation "Watching migrating white pelicans in Iowa thinking about Niebuhr's Serenity Prayer". "Darth", a prominent and playful figure on the social media site, noted his presence in Iowa - wearing running shoes - and added a Nike swoosh and the words, "he's running".

The first tweet, on March 30, was a meme from the 2004 film "Anchorman", which quoted main character Ron Burgundy: "Actually I'm not even mad. That's unbelievable", Ferrell's character said.

Comey did not immediately respond to a message from The New York Times to his Twitter account.
