'Unprecedented': Five Living US Presidents to Attend Disaster Relief Concert

At the start of the relief concert all five of the U.S. Presidents-Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter-took the stage, put their hands over their hearts and stood together during the playing of national anthem.

President Donald Trump did not attend the concert, but praised the effort in a video message released earlier, terming it a "wonderful" and "vital effort". The 93-year-old elder Bush suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease and appeared in a wheelchair at the event.

The event, coordinated by the five former presidents as a fundraiser for hurricane relief, featured several renown musical artists, including Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Sam Moore, the group Alabama and "special guest" Lady Gaga.

Four of the five former presidents - Obama, George W. Bush, Carter and Clinton - made brief remarks that did not mention Trump.

Former President Bill Clinton evoked his predecessor in his statements as well, recalling the 41st president's reminder that "our problems are great, but the heart of America is greater".

He added that his intention wasn't to throw nor hit the referee with his mouthpiece, and he does expect to be fined by the league. Kevin Durant attempted to pick up the offensive slack with Curry on the bench (29 points and 13 rebounds).

The last time the five were together was in 2013, when Obama was still in office, at the dedication of George W. Bush's presidential library in Dallas.

"It's certainly a triple, if not a home run, every time", said Brandon Rottinghaus, a political science professor at the University of Houston. In it, George W. Bush says, "People are hurting down here". "There is still work to be done in Texas and in Florida, and our friends in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have only begun to dig their way out of what could be still a calamitous disaster, but can be a new beginning".

Former president George W. Bush joined his peers in honoring his father and also noted to an elated crowd he was glad for the opportunity to introduce his fellow presidents to "one of the finest universities in the United States". His father, George H.W. Bush, then replies, "We love you, Texas".

A website accepting donations, OneAmericaAppeal.org, was created with 100 percent of proceeds pledged to hurricane relief.

The concert at Texas A&M's Reed Arena was to raise money for the victims of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
