Storm Brian, now over the mid-Atlantic, will "undertake explosive cyclogenesis" over the next 24 hours, according to the Met Office, meaning the low pressure cyclonic weather system will see a rapid collapse in pressure.

Forecasters say flooding and power cuts are possible as the storm batters the country.

Wild conditions have started battering Wales and the South West of England this morning, with gusts of wind reaching up to 70 miles per hour on the coastlines and 50 miles per hour inland.

The chief forecaster added: "Gusts exceeding 50mph are expected widely within the warning area, with gusts of around 70mph along exposed coastal areas".

"The low pressure system will then migrate northwards on Sunday taking the stronger winds with it".

The Met Office's Irish partner issued an Orange warning for wind for some parts of Ireland.

'We are more concerned about flooding occurring in areas such as the north western and south western parts of England and also Wales, which is why our 45 flood alerts and six flood warnings remain in place.

'As we go through Saturday morning the strong southwesterly winds affecting the South and West will spread eastwards and slowly change direction as they will become westerly towards the end of the warning period.

Alison Baptiste, national flood duty manager for the Environment Agency, warned the public against social media stunts during the bad weather.

He said: 'Environment Agency teams are on the ground, checking defences and taking precautionary action to close tidal gates and put up temporary barriers. The gusts could bring more power cuts after Ophelia left 50,000 people in the United Kingdom and 170,000 in Ireland without power, and could also cause flooding and large waves.

He warned thrill seekers not to risk their safety by posing for "storm selfies" along the coast.

ESB Networks said 63,000 properties were still...

Wind speeds of up to 80mph in isolated areas has been predicted as the storm sweeps over the south of the United Kingdom and Ireland before moving northwards.
