"Our group is dedicated to giving students opportunities to enrich their lives and the lives of those around them through projects and events that promote kindness, happiness and compassion to others", she said.

Shouting and booing from the protesters in the hall - which included plenty of empty space and a small contingent of his supporters in the first few rows - left Spencer unable to make a sustained speech.

White supremacist leader Richard Spencer is a "terrorist", the mayor of Gainesville, Florida said ahead of Mr Spencer's controversial speech at the University of Florida.

Audience members chanted, "It's your fault!" as Spencer talked about Heather Heyer, a woman who died when a driver rammed his auto into counter-protesters at a violent white nationalist protest in August in Charlottesville, Virginia. According to the ADL, he has become "more openly anti-Semitic in recent years".

Student leaders are hosting a "virtual assembly" via Facebook during Spencer's event to discuss race relations and diversity.

Spencer, a co-editor AltRight.com, was originally denied a request to speak at UF. He said he had a message for Spencer: "Don't be racist".

As Spencer supporters made their way through throngs of protesters, they faced chants of "you've been replaced".

A group called "No Nazis" at UF is planning a protest on campus.

He was only allowed to attend the meet on condition that he would return to his club after the preliminary round. It went nearly as it was planned but one thing which lacked was we failed to score".

University of Florida president W. Kent Fuchs has asked students to stay clear of Spencer's talk.

Previous speeches from Spencer on college campuses have sparked protests, including at Texas A&M in December and Alabama's Auburn University in April.

But at a news conference shortly before he was scheduled to take the stage, a combative Spencer demanded apologies from the media and characterized himself as a victim.

"We are hoping this is a nonevent", Darnell said.

By law, the school must pay for the additional costs of security.

UF expects to spend $500,000 on security for the event.

But in a climate in which the conversation is focused on affordability, ROI and the public burden of higher education, framing opposition to allowing these individuals on campus is an incredibly savvy move which will catch the attention of the same legislators who seek to push through bills to protect free speech above all. "I believe education is his greatest enemy", Fuchs said.
