Trump's fortune drops to $3.1 billion, ties Snap's Evan Spiegel on new Forbes 400 rich list

This year's Forbes 400 list was the most discerning of all, as the magazine reported that the minimum net worth required to be included hit a record high of $2 billion. It had been $1.7 billion in 2016. The previous year has cost POTUS another $600 million, most of it because the Big Apple heart of his real estate empire is rotting, but also because the Trump brand in hospitality has become as toxic as the Trump brand in politics.

Bill Gates: $89 billion, up $8 billion Jeff Bezos: $81.5 billion, up $14.5 billion Warren Buffett: $78 billion, up $12.5 billion Mark Zuckerberg: $71 billion, up $15.5 billion Larry Ellison: $59 billion, up $9.7 billion.

Forbes said 289 people on the list saw their fortunes increase in the previous year, while 51 billionaires saw their net worth decrease.

However, Trump's real estate assets in Las Vegas and San Francisco both increased in value this past year.

The latest list sees the US President drop 92 places, from 156th to 248th, on the list after the magazine says his personal worth fell by £454 million to £2.45 billion, due to a decline in property value in Manhattan and a £19 million payout to settle a lawsuit.

As a candidate, Trump said his net worth was more than $10bn, but Forbes pegged that figure at $4.5bn in September 2015.

According to Forbes, half of Trump's wealth comes from New York City real estate.
