Monmouth University Poll: Virginia Gubernatorial Race Is Tied

President Obama to campaign for Northam in Richmond

President Obama to campaign for Northam in Richmond

Democrat Ralph Northam has a hefty cash advantage over Republican Ed Gillespie in the final weeks of Virginia's closely watched governor's race.

Overall: Gillespie 48 percent; Northam 47.

"This has never been more than a five-point race in Monmouth's polling, and that means either candidate has a very real shot at winning this thing", Patrick Murray, the director of the Monmouth University Polling Institute, said. "We have seen lots of little movement that has either helped or hurt each candidate but with neither one being able to break out".

It will be held at the Richmond Convention Center, according to an email sent to Northam supporters who applied for tickets to the rally.

Northam's big donors included unions and special interest groups like Planned Parenthood and the Virginia League of Conservation Voters, as well as best-selling authors John Grisham and David Baldacci.

Overall in Virginia, although nearly 1 in 3 voters cite Trump as a factor in their choice, a strong majority of Gillespie voters (75%) say the president is not a factor, and a majority (58%) of Northam voters also say he is not a factor.

While President Trump has thrown his support behind Gillespie, just over four in 10 commonwealth voters say Mr. Trump is either a major (29 percent) or minor factor (14 percent) in their gubernatorial vote choice. Almost 3 out of 4 Independents (71%) say Trump is not a factor in their choice.

The Northam campaign told the Washington Examiner that there was no malice behind the adjustment of the ad, calling it "fairly innocuous". Northam is trying to tie Gilespie, a traditional Republican, to Trump. Gillespie leads in the state's rural GOP strongholds. Gillespie posed to Northam.
