Fifa Under-17 World Cup Title contenders England look to overcome Japan in round of 16

The forward has been playing for the England Under-17s in the World Cup in India and was busy preparing for their last-16 clash against Japan.

Having topped their group with three wins out of three scoring 11 goals, England went into the game as strong favourites but soon found the going tough with the absence of Jadon Sancho, who was recalled by his club Borussia Dortmund.

He was only allowed to attend the meet on condition that he would return to his club after the preliminary round.

But from what has been on display over the last week, it would be naive to imagine Steve Cooper's charges struggling against Japan even sans Sancho. People enjoyed seeing Jadon play. He was really relishing the chance to play in a World Cup.

Hudson-Odoi had big boots to fill on the left flank, replacing Jadon Sancho - the Chelsea player started slow but his shimmying runs in the second half and risky, low crosses which the Japanese defence often failed to read suggested England might miss Hudson-Odoi's link-up play with Sancho for the rest of the tournament, but the 17-year-old has them covered when it comes to skillful, pacy playmaking on the left wing.

"It was disappointing to see him go".

"I was very impressed how the players played. I was moved by the players, who fought hard and did their utmost", he said. They played some great football, showed great character in not conceding.

"We have two targets: to do as well as we can in each tournament that we play and to ensure these players' long-term development", he added. "We created chances. It went nearly as it was planned but one thing which lacked was we failed to score".

Barring Stoke City goalkeeper Josef Bursik, England have used all of their 20 players in three games underlining the depth in their ranks.

Asia's most prolific team in qualification with 24 goals, Japan head home from their eighth U17 World Cup with a sixth finish beyond the group stages, but failed to emulate their quarterfinal appearances of 1993 and 2011.

After coasting to a 6-1 victory over lowly Honduras, Japan were checked by France 1-2 with key players Keito Nakamura and Takefusa Kubo man-marked and their midfielders zonally choked.

"Penalties are the harshest way to decide a football match but our idea is to develop all parts of the players and penalty shootouts are a part of that development". In the other camp, the likes of Phil Foden, Angel Gomes, Rhian Brewster and George McEachran would look to continue their superb run upfront hassle free.
