Two urban development companies have won a bid to jointly transform Toronto's eastern waterfront into a technology hub which will feature the home of Google's Canadian headquarters. "On behalf of our Faculty, I would like to welcome Sidewalk Labs to the neighbourhood".

Schmidt said that "we are making a bold bet that innovation technology and forward-thinking urban design can make fundamental improvements in city life". "Sidewalk Labs scoured the globe for the ideal place to create a district focused on solutions to these pressing challenges, and we found it on Toronto's Eastern Waterfront-along with the flawless public-sector partner, Waterfront Toronto".

An 800-acre strip of Toronto's waterfront may show us how cities of the future could be built. Along with related developments, the mega-project is being dubbed "Sidewalk Toronto". To jumpstart the development, Alphabet has already announced plans to bring Google's Canadian headquarters to the Eastern Waterfront.

"This will create a testbed for new technologies", Trudeau said.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as at this morning's contract signing ceremony.

Carney reveals United Kingdom inflation expectations
He added that fragmenting the European clearing system would "create costs for the European real economy". Mark Carney, the BoE governor, has stated his opinion that an interest rate hike is forthcoming.

The initiative, called Sidewalk Toronto, is a joint effort between Sidewalk Labs and the public agency Waterfront Toronto.

Toronto is about to become the tech capital of Canada in the next few years, and it's starting right now with Alphabet, the division of Google that focuses on urban innovation, has chosen Toronto to be its next big project.

The project - called Sidewalk Toronto - will be located in a new neighbourhood called Quayside, located in the Port Lands. The vision includes developing and advancing new ideas that improve city life, from climate-positive energy systems that can deliver a new standard in sustainability, to self-driving transit that makes streets safer, to new adaptable buildings and construction techniques that lower housing costs.

The only snag may be the humans: as we've said in the past, people can do dumb things with smart cities. Mayor John Tory said the project will also allow companies to address problems such as housing affordability and mobility issues.

Over the next year, community and stakeholder events will be held throughout the city to receive public input on Sidewalk Toronto. They aim improve the infrastructure and transportation system, as well as create new affordable housing and retail spaces. "It will also reflect the cultural diversity and openness of Toronto, and help connect all Torontonians to waterfront beaches, parks, and communities".
