'During these clashes, the National Hospital was liberated and cleared from the Daesh mercenaries, and 22 of these foreign mercenaries were killed there, ' said Bali.

The fight for Raqqa has shattered much of the city.

Activists said numerous civilian casualties were the result of the intense US-led air strikes that helped the SDF advance, though the coalition said it had adhered to strict targeting processes and procedures aimed to minimise risks to civilians. Houses, apartment blocks and public buildings were flattened by air strikes or holed by shellfire.

However, the coalition would only say that the battle was "near its end", with spokesman Col Ryan Dillon estimating that about 100 militants were left in Raqqa.

Children who fled were haunted by nightmares from the violence they witnessed, including Daesh beheadings and coalition air strikes, it said.

Kurdish influence in the future of the mainly Arab city has been a sensitive issue for some activists from Raqqa and for Turkey.

He added the SDF was combing the city for any remaining jihadists who had not surrendered or been killed.

A local field commander said no Islamic State fighters remained even in their two remaining city strongholds.

Hartley to make F1 debut in Austin
Hartley , meanwhile, will become the ninth New Zealander to race in F1, but the first since Mike Thackwell in 1984. Hartley was named a Red Bull junior in 2007 alongside a batch of drivers including Daniel Ricciardo.

The SDF took the National Hospital after fierce fighting overnight and early on Tuesday, said spokesman Mostafa Bali.

Raqqa's stadium also served as an arms depot and one of the Islamic State militants' largest jails in their self-styled caliphate.

Up to 300 militants were thought to be holding out on Sunday, after Syrian jihadists and their families were evacuated along with 3500 civilians under a deal negotiated by the Raqqa Civil Council and local Arab tribal elders.

Raqqa had become a byword for atrocities carried out by the jihadists and it was from the city that IS organised devastating attacks it has claimed overseas like the Paris massacres in 2015 or August's attacks in Barcelona.

The Al-Naim traffic circle had been dubbed the "Roundabout of Hell" by residents under IS's more than three years of rule over the city.

The offensive has pushed Daesh from most of northern Syria, while a rival offensive by the Syrian army, backed by Russia, Iran and Shiite militias, has driven the extremists from the central desert.

After Raqa, anti-IS efforts will focus on Deir Ezzor province, where the militants still control areas around the town of Mayadeen, part of provincial capital Deir Ezzor, as well as several villages and remote desert areas. They are areas that, for the past three years, the Islamic State ran from Raqqa. "The Islamic State group is collapsing under pressure from the regime in Deir Ezzor province", it said.
