Among BSE sectoral indices, banking index gained the most by 1.33 per cent, followed by TECk 1.23 per cent, metal 1.17 per cent and realty 0.54 per cent.

The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark Sensex on Monday rose to a new high of 32,643 points, while the National Stock Exchange's Nifty crossed the 10,000 mark for the first time to 10,200 points.

Uninterrupted buying by domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bolstered the trading sentiment, traders said.

The Sensex of the BSE, which opened at 32,488.23 points, was trading at 32,666.74 points (at 9.42 a.m.), higher 234.05 points or 0.72 per cent from Friday's close at 32,432.69 points.

Both the indices rose last week, with the Sensex adding 618.47 points, or 1.94 percent - the biggest such weekly jump since July 14 when it read 660.12 points, or 2.10 percent - and the NSE Nifty soared 187.75 points, or 1.88 percent.

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharti Airtel (4.96%), Mahindra & Mahindra (2.99%), Tata Motors (2.85%), Hindustan Unilever (2.84%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (2.52%), and Cipla (2.42%). Japan's Nikkei too was up 0.63 per cent.
