Tributes have been paid to Irish comedian Sean Hughes who has died at the age of 51.

Hughes was recently taken to north London's Whittington Hospital and reportedly died from cirrhosis of the liver which led to cardiac arrest.

However it was his long-running appearance on Never Mind The Buzzcocks, along with his own sitcom Sean's Show, which made him a household name.

Hughes began appearing at the Comedy Store in 1987 and won the prestigious Perrier Comedy Award for his show A One Night Stand With Sean Hughes - the youngest ever to win.

Stand-up comic Al Murray wrote: "Terribly sad news about Sean Hughes". Very talented comic, loved & respected.

Jack Dee said: "Very sad to hear about Sean Hughes".

And Richard Herring simply shared: "Sean Hughes".

The development comes after hundreds of Oxford Mail readers said the plans were bad for business or unworkable, in an online poll. However, the council also admitted it would be "need to be supported with further funding" from central government.

The star, who was born in London but grew up in Dublin, last sent a tweet on October 8 saying he was in hospital.

Matt continued: 'He'd been unwell, but when I started out on the comedy circuit about 25 years ago, Sean was one of the biggest stars'.

Irvine Welsh added, "Sad to hear about Sean Hughes".

Irish comedian Dara O Briain said: 'Ah, that is very sad news.

Irish writer Paul Howard said, "Irish comedy in the 1990s".

During his career, Hughes also wrote books and presented several radio shows on the BBC.

He is survived by his two brothers, Alan and Martin.
