Many wrote that they had never known a woman who had not been sexually harassed or assaulted.

Milano's call came as the scope of allegations against Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has been coming to light.

Debra Messing, star of Will and Grace, Anna Paquin, the Oscar-winning actress from New Zealand, and Labour MP Stella Creasy are among those who have spoken out using the hashtag.

The actress said she got the idea from a friend, who told her such a tweet "might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem".

Ms Milano was one of the earliest supporters of her Charmed co-star Rose McGowan's #WomenBoycottTwitter protest on Friday, after Ms McGowan was temporarily suspended from the social media site in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal.

"Hours after seeing the enormous "Me too" Tweets, Twitter appeared with a message in support of all those women who raised their voices against sexual predators".

"I wish I could remember who I was before #MeToo", a woman named Rosey wrote. "Hamilton" actor, Javier Muñoz, also tweeted "me too", and shared that he was a victim of sexual assault or harassment "multiple times".

"Sexual harassment and assault in the workplace are not just about Harvey Weinstein", she wrote". Not only have people been contributing on Twitter, but the status has made its way onto other social media platforms with people sharing experiences and stories.

London's Metropolitan Police force said Sunday that the woman reported being assaulted in London in 2010, 2011 and 2015. I realize that while I've not been sexually assaulted I have been sexually harassed (many times before.) Sadly that's the case with most women at some point in their lives right?. "You've given me the courage to finally speak out and not be afraid".

Milano spoke out against Weinstein on her website, Patriot not Partisan, on October 9, four days after the New York Times story was published. "We must do better for women everywhere".
