So, I can only imagine how 68-year-old Jimmie Smith felt when he found a winning lottery ticket in an old shirt that was worth $24.1 million!

Smith said he needed some time after finding the $24 million victor "to clear out some cob webs" before making the trip to the Lottery's lower Manhattan Customer Service Center to claim the ticket.

Jimmie Smith had bought the tickets almost a year ago, and claimed his prize with just two days to go before its expiry date.

The retired security guard told lottery officials he's been buying lottery tickets since the 1960s but doesn't usually rush to see whether he's won.

He said: "I always told myself, 'I'll check them when I have the time"'.

The tragic irony? Jimmy Smith was buying for decades a lottery in NY and New Jersey, but never managed to win.

Hurricane Ophelia 'accelerating' in the Atlantic, forecasters say
National Hurricane Center said the storm was located Thursday about 715 miles (1,145 kilometers) southwest of the Azores . Hurricane Ophelia is getting even bigger as it makes its way across the Atlantic and towards the shores of Britain.

That was good timing, because he has only two days before a deadline to claim his prize. The single lucky ticket matched all five numbers drawn that night - 3, 18, 19, 35 and 36 - to win the Jersey Cash 5 jackpot of $766,918.

"I took my head out of the window to breathe air".

He found the ticket stuffed in an old shirt and found that he had a victor.

The New York lottery released his name this week, after completing its review.

He has chosen to receive his payment in instalments spaced out over 26 years. I was in serious doubt. "I didn't see the face or anything". "I really had to convince myself this was real".

Smith plans to have an "all-family" meeting to discuss how the money will be split up, according to the gaming commission.
