Senator Calls for Facebook to Release Russia-Related Election Ads

Exclusive: Russian-linked Facebook ads targeted Michigan and Wisconsin

Senators Richard Burr and Mark Warner called on Facebook to publicly release the ads, which have already been privately handed over to committee staffers investigating Russia's meddling in USA elections, during a press conference Wednesday on Capitol Hill. "Now, I'm not even going to discuss initial findings because we haven't any".

Burr added that the U.S. Intelligence community had little light to shed on the dosser's allegations before June 2016.

"The Russian intelligence service is determined, clever and I recommend every campaign and every elected official take this seriously", Burr said.

During the course of the investigation, committee members and staff investigators have conducted mostly behind-the-doors interviews with several members of Trump's inner circle and the intelligence community.

Three congressional panels and special counsel Robert Mueller are investigating Russia's meddling in the election and possible collusion.

The committee's consensus view is not its final finding, Burr said, and the question will remaining open until the committee's investigation is complete, which could take many more months.

Burr said wouldn't be drawn in to responding directly to the president on that point, but he did reaffirm that he had no doubt that Russia's "active measures" campaign had taken place previous year and continues, in different form, to target the West.

Burr also said the panel had interviewed seven attendees of an April 2016 event at the Mayflower Hotel - where then-Russian Ambassador to the US Sergey Kislyak spoke briefly with Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner - and their testimony was consistent. Only an interview with the former British intelligence officer who produced it, Christopher Steele, could help move things forward, Burr said, but Steele has not agreed to talk. "They've been unbelievably cooperative".

Warner, the vice chair of the committee, told reporters that "at the end of the day it's important that the public see these ads".

He said the committee had also "interviewed every person" that was involved in drafting the Republican campaign platform, suggesting that investigators had found no evidence of nefarious activity by Trump campaign officials in fashioning that platform to support a "strong ally in Ukraine, but also leave the door open for better relations with Russian Federation". "If somebody has come in and not been truthful with us, we will catch them on that, and they will come back".

Richard Burr said that after 250 hours' worth of interviews and 100,000 documents - including campaign materials and highly secret intelligence reports - the Intelligence Committee doesn't have an interim conclusion.

The dossier contains unproven allegations of misconduct by Trump and his campaign as well as collusion between it and the Russian government ahead of the USA election. "I'm giving you the feedback we got from the individuals who were in the room making the decisions". An FBI investigation began in July 2016. "We have not come to any determination on collusion", Burr added.

Burr also stressed that "the issue of collusion is still open", and would not be resolved until the committee's work was done.
