Yankees -Twins: AL Wild Card Game preview

Over at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, the MLB playoffs will be getting started as the Minnesota Twins visit the New York Yankees in the American League Wild Card Game.

Even with 50,000 screaming New Yorkers packed into Yankee Stadium, Twins catcher Jason Castro knows first-hand it is possible to prevail here in the postseason.

Both teams, however, exceeded expectations over the last 162 games, and they've got a chance to reach the ALDS with just one victory.

It's time to start the drive on the road to the fall classic tonight at 8 p.m.

Yankees: One year into a youth movement, the Baby Bombers blossomed fast under 10th-year manager Joe Girardi and returned NY to the postseason perhaps ahead of schedule.

In other words, the Twins aren't supposed to be here and the Yankees aren't supposed to lose. He also was tagged for a loss in relief for the Angels during the 2009 American League Championship Series.

Well, anyone except Miguel Sano, who is not on the Wild Card playoff roster tonight.

"How many wins?" Santana asked when his numbers were brought up. While Santana has been able to limit his BB:K ratio (0.37:1), his home-run rate is slightly concerning, as he's given up 1.32 HR/9 during the regular season.

Judge's Major League Baseball rookie record of 52 home runs is already pressed into the books, and the slugging right fielder has eagerly turned a page to Tuesday night's elimination game. NY hasn't won a postseason game since Derek Jeter broke his ankle in the 2012 ALCS opener against Detroit, which went on to a sweep.

Koeman: Everton fans can not complain about players´ attitude
They showed how we had to play. "In life you don't get a second opportunity, but I'm not unhappy with what I saw from the team". Hopefully we can play some good football, get the fans behind us and have a good boost going into the global break.

Can the Twins upset the heavily favored Yankees?

The largest improvement though was on the mound as a re-bolstered rotation led by Ervin Santana went from allowing 5.49 runs per game to 4.86.

Santana has more experience than his counterpart, NY starter Luis Severino, who is making his postseason debut.

The Twins have arguably the best defense in the league, and it's been a huge reason why they are where they are. NY is due at 9 a.m. Tuesday morning. CC Sabathia will also be available as insurance behind young ace Luis Severino.

This game is going to come down to who has the better bullpen, and that edge goes to the Yankees. New York's relievers are third in all of baseball with a 3.34 ERA.

Brandon Kintzler is the anchor of the Minnesota bullpen, posting a 2.78 ERA with 28 saves.

Never known to be a home-run hitting team, the Twins had four players with 20 or more long balls, led by Dozier's 34.

For the Twins (85-77), it was a different path to their first postseason berth since 2010. The more realistic candidate, though, is Aroldis Chapman late in the game.

When they meet again in the 2017 playoffs, the Yankees will need just one game to end Minnesota's brief postseason run.
