The Civil Aviation Authority ordered the airline to issue clarification of their entitlements under EU261 as it believed the airline had broken European Union law by not being clear about customers entitlements.

Ryanair must offer them a refund or the option of re-routing, including one with another airline, and tell them how to make a claim for expenses.

Ryanair on Wednesday said it plans to cancel more flights, affecting around 400,000 customers until March, as it struggles with a shortage of pilots.

"We will be meeting with the CAA and will comply fully with whatever requirements they ask us to", Ryanair said in a statement on Thursday.

In a press release the airline state that any passenger wishing to change their mind "should write directly to Ryanair's Director of Customer Services and Ryanair will assist them in any way it can to obtain their full EU261 rights and entitlements".

Ryanair confirmed yesterday that it is to cancel 22 flights a week to and from Dublin, between November 1 and March 24.

The carrier, which on Wednesdaycancelled a further 18,000 flights on top of the hundreds of thousands axed a week earlier, said it had emailed the thousands of people affected by the cancellations informing them of their options, while it has also updated its terms and conditions on its website.

Andrew Haines, chief executive of the CAA, commented: "There are clear laws in place, which are meant to assist passengers in the event of a cancellation".

Irish budget airline Ryanair has been given until 5pm today by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to compensate the customers that have been affected by its recent flight cancellations.

If no Ryanair flight was available to get customers to their ticketed destination, customers can opt for a comparable flight on Easyjet, Jet2, Vueling, Cityjet, Aer Lingus, Norwegian or Eurowings, the airline clarified.

He added that 99 per cent of Ryanair's customers remain unaffected by the cancellations. The airline will cancel 22 flights a week going to and from Dublin.
