The Myanmar authorities have accused Muslim Rohingya militants of killing 28 Hindu villagers whose bodies were allegedly found in a mass grave. It has been reported that present violence began after Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) attacked Myanmar police and paramilitary posts in a response to protect their ethnic minority group from persecution by security forces.

World leaders and high-level representatives gathered in NY to address the assembly this week, with many urging action on the situation in Rakhine, where an August 25 attack on 30 police outposts and the subsequent military crackdown by government security forces have garnered worldwide attention and sparked claims of ethnic cleansing.

Myanmar said before the mass graves were found that more than 400 people had been killed, a lot of them insurgents.

Malaysia said Sunday the statement misrepresents the reality of the situation, omits reference to Rohingya Muslims and was not based on consensus — a rare public spat in ASEAN, which prides itself on deciding issues by consensus.

Myanmar's leader Aung San Suu Kyi should personally meet members of the Muslim Rohingya minority which is being subjected to ongoing persecution by the military, a group of United Nations human rights experts said on Tuesday.

Anifah said Malaysia had made known its concerns to its fellow ASEAN members, "but they were not reflected in the chairman's statement".

"What is crucial now is that Asean undertakes a coordinated effort to assist Myanmar in addressing the needs of the people in the area, in particular their security, livelihood, and well-being, and to provide humanitarian assistance to those communities which are affected", the DFA said.

"Everyone knows that the Rohingya have no documents on them as they are not recognized as citizens of Myanmar".

Rights bodies said actions against the Rohingyas were disproportionate as Rohingya villages were burned down, men killed and women raped. Suu Kyi failed to quell outrage over the plight of the Rohingya when she delivered a nationwide address last week in which she appealed for patience.

Along with Indonesia, Muslim-majority Malaysia has long expressed its solidarity with the Rohingya community, including sending an "aid flotilla" to supply 1,472 tons of food and non-food items to some 15,000 Rohingya families in February.

Stephane Dujarric, chief United Nations spokesman, said earlier in the day that some 436,000 refugees from northern Rakhine, mostly women and children, have arrived in Bangladesh.
