"I am today an out lesbian who just sued the United States of America, which is kind of overwhelming for me", Windsor said at the time.

Her death was confirmed to The New York Times by her wife, Judith Kasen-Windsor, whom she married in 2016. But the USA did not recognize their marriage, with the result that when Spyer died two years later, Windsor owed $363,000 in estate taxes - which she would not have owed if she had been married to a man.

The couple had been partners for 44 years and had married in Canada in 2007.

Windsor, outside the Supreme Court after oral arguments in Windsor v.

In a landmark 2013 ruling the US Supreme agreed - and that decision became the basis for a wave of further court rulings increasing the rights of same-sex couples.

Gay rights pioneer Edith Windsor, whose lawsuit against the federal government helped pave the way for same-sex marriage nationwide, has died at 88. "She will always be the light for the LGBTQ community which she loved so much and which loved her right back", stated Kasen-Windsor, who Wednesday Edie in 2016.

Google challenges record European antitrust fine in court
At the time of the ruling, the tech giant had said it "respectfully" disagreed with the findings and would consider an appeal. Margrethe Vestager, the EU's antitrust chief, has also threatened further probes on travel or map services.

Reacting to news of Windsor's death, her longtime attorney Roberta Kaplan released a short statement, praising her as a "true American hero". The women married in Canada when they realized they might not be living when NY state legalized same-sex marriage, which it did in 2011.

"Don't let anything make you feel that somehow they can beat us, because they can't", she said at the time. As we mourn this monumental loss, we leave you with the words of Windsor on the importance of same-sex marriage: "Married is a magic word and it is magic throughout the world".

Windsor met her first wife, Thea Spyer, in the 1960s. While everyone else went out dancing, she waited up all night for Spyer to arrive-she finally showed up the next afternoon.

"One simply can not write the history of the gay rights movement without reserving vast credit and gratitude for Edie Windsor", Romero said. With Edie's passing, I lost not only a treasured client, but a member of my family. "Her legacy will live on in history and be felt in the lives of our community for many years to come". She fought for dignity and laid the foundation for marriage equality. Windsor requested that, instead of flowers, donations in her memory be made to The NYC LGBT Center, Callen-Lorde, Hetrick-Martin Institute, and SAGE.

While Windor's case struck down the heart of the Defense of Marriage Act, it only protected marriage equality in those states that already allowed it.
