Hurricanes help keep gas prices up in Delaware

The highest was about $2.76 per gallon in the Traverse City area.

The national average for a gallon of gas Monday was above $2.66, and both metro Albany and Georgia, which usually have prices below the US average, were well above that number.

The average in the state of Nevada also increased.

Comparing it to other gas prices at this time in previous years, gas was $2.27 per gallon in 2016 and 2015, $3.53 per gallon in 2014, $3.58 per gallon in 2013 and $4.07 per gallon in 2012. A year ago, the state average was $2.32.

Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy, says prices appear to have peaked in the last week.

The price action suggests the market was unable to sustain earlier strength on the daily chart as weakening demand off of hurricane activity more than offsetting any potential loss of production.

DeHaan said motorists should not expect to see any impact on gasoline prices due to Hurricane Irma because of the path the storm is expected to take.

NY state's average price on Sunday was 33.4 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and 48.6 cents higher than a year ago. "With summer driving season now over, motorists stand to benefit from falling demand, which will help refineries bring gasoline inventories back to normal and thus gas prices, but as many Americans are now acutely aware, the impact on gas prices can outlive a storm, especially one like Harvey".

The lowest average price in MI was about $2.66 per gallon in the Detroit area. Prices are up about 20% from the August average of $2.281 and 24% from the average a year ago of $2.199.

The price of gas in MA has not changed this week.
